I am storyteller specializing in documenting social issues and humanitarian crisis in conflict-affected societies as well as covering current international and national events while also pursuing personal documentary projects. Born in El Salvador, Central America and then immigrated to the United States during the mid-1980’s settling in Los Angeles, California where I finished my secondary education and went on to attend California State University, Northridge, obtaining a B.A. in Arts with an emphasis in Interior Design. Upon graduation, I decided to apply my skills to photography and have since developed a vocation as a photojournalist.

Over the course of my career I photographed many recent political, social, economic, environmental, health,human rights and conflict issues in the United States, Latin America and the Middle East, focusing on under-reported issues and long-term projects,including the ongoing post-conflict situation in my native country of El Salvador.

Personal projects are part of being a photographer and I believe that the goal of a documentary photographer is to create images that can visually translate the reality one witnesses. Keeping in mind a critical eye and ethics. One does not take images; you make images,which are full of visual literacy. It is impossible to photograph a subject with objectivity, but it is possible to show a story with truth and without manipulating the events, which one is witnessing. The role of a photojournalist becomes more important when you hear the testimonies of a victim or when you witness the harm one human being causes another.

As a professional freelancer I have done assignments, reportage and stories worldwide for many of the world’s leading publications. I still love shooting film especially monochrome for many of my long term projects but I am fully digital for the current demand of the media industry.

Nowadays, I am based between San Francisco, California and San Salvador, El Salvador, but always moving.

Soy narrador de historias especializado en documentar temas sociales y la crisis humanitaria en las sociedades afectadas por el conflicto, también dando cobertura a noticias y temas actuales a nivel internacional y nacional, mientras que también llevo acabo proyectos personales. Nací en El Salvador  y emigre a los Estados Unidos durante la década de los ochenta, estableciéndome en Los Ángeles, California, donde termine mis estudios de secundaria y desués asistí a la Universidad Estatal de California, Northridge obteniendo una licenciatura en artes con énfasis en diseño de interiores. Despuésde mi graduación, decidí aplicar mis conocimientos a la fotografía y desde entonces he desarrollado una vocación como fotoperiodista.

A lo largo de mi carrera he fotografiado temasde política, sociales, económia, ambientales, salud, derechos humanos yconflictos en los Estados Unidos, América Latina y Oriente Medio, centrándome en temas de bajo perfil y proyectos a largo plazo, incluyendo la situación deposguerra en mi país natal de El Salvador.

Los proyectos personales son parte de serun fotdocumentalista y yo creo que el objetivo de un fotógrafo documental es crear imágenes que se pueden traducir visualmente la realidad de la cual uno estestigo. Teniendo en mente el uso de un ojo crítico y ética. Uno no toma fotos; crea imágenes, que están llenas de la literatura visual. Es imposible fotografiar un tema con objetividad, pero es posible mostrar una historia con la verdad y sin manipular los acontecimientos de los cuales uno es testigo. El papel de un fotoperiodista se hace más importante cuando uno escucha el testimonio de una víctima o cuando es testigo del daño que un ser humano le causa a otro.

Como fotógrafo profesional independiente he hecho reportajes e historias asi como trabajado en asignaciones para muchas de las principales publicaciones a nivel mundial. Aun me encanta disparar película especialmente blanco y negro para muchos de mis proyectos de largo plazo, estoy totalmente equipado con camara digital para cumplir con la demanda actual de la industria de los medios.

Actualmente, divido mi tiempo, entre San Francisco, California y San Salvador, El Salvador, pero siempre en viajando, trabajando como fotoperiodista freelance.
