The youthmake up 34% of El Salvador’s total population and the ones in most danger due to the ongoing violence the country is facing. Gangs are killing each other as well as are targeting and harassing young Salvadorans living in/or around neighborhoods overrun by the gangs, attacking them just because they live in a neighborhood that is controlled by the rival gang or for not wanting to join the gang and women are targeted to get sexually involved with them many times being force to have a relationship. It has been recorded that more and more young children are joining gangs, kids as young as 9 years old are already involved in gang activity being used as “postes” (look outs) or collecting the extortion money and others committing murders which has become the initiation method. The country has the murder capital of the world and is one of the most dangerous countries for the young with the highest murder rate in the world for young adults ages 14-24 years old including some of the highest murder rates for people of all ages. The two major gangs Mara Salvadtrucha – MS13 and Barrio 18, which are now divided into Revolucionarios and Sureños, cause most of the violence, with an estimated 55,000 gang members in addition to an estimated 470,000 affiliated with the gangs, including family members, friends and helpers. The you feel the country is too dangerous for young people especially if you live in or around a neighborhood where there is gang’s presence. The young are living dangerous times limiting their ability to freely move around the country without the fear of being the next victim.
